Our 4th of July

The kids and I returned in time to celebrate our nation's birthday together as a family. And Joe actually had the day off*. Win-win!  Hannah and I slept the morning away...traveling** for nearly a month really tires a mom and baby out!!! Joe and the big kids went to a parade and managed to scrounge up a little candy.  Apparently some people were a tad aggressive in their candy grabbing and made it extra challenging for my not-so-big "big kids".

We spent the evening with church friends doing all the usual stuff...grilling, eating {way too much!}, chatting and lighting things up! Only one or two minor burns were sustained. A definite life lesson learned for my accident prone child. Sparklers are still hot even when not burning. Other than that, I would say it was a huge success. Thank you friends for opening up your home to us.

Funny story: Last night (this morning technically speaking) I woke up at 2 am...in my own bed...and I had NO CLUE  where I was. I mean I seriously did not recognize the room in the dark. I stared at the dark walls and tried really hard to "place" them in my memory. It wasn't until I had turned on my flashlight that I realized I was in my bed in my house:) Even then I was still confused. I couldn't figure out where my children were. I guess that is what happens to a person after sharing a room with their kids for so long. Correction: many different rooms. Clearly I need  to stay home for a while.

*Joe is "on call" for the first time this weekend.  I am putting it down in The Archives so I can remember it. I know my future self will laugh at my current self for thinking his first weekend of call as a med student is note-worthy, but for right now it is big stuff for us. Let the fun begin.

**I have been asked many  a couple times, "how do you do it?" in reference to traveling alone with the kids. So to oblige my faithful followers I will share my secrets....tomorrow. Stay tuned. Or don't:)

  1. On the 4th we all crashed at nap time. Luke fell asleep when he put the kids down for nap. I decided to read my book (not realizing he had fallen asleep) and fell asleep. I woke up two hours later really confused at where I was, what time of day it was, and where my family was. It took awhile for me to figure it out. Once I calmed myself down I fell back asleep for another half hour. My 8 day trip did me in too..4 different beds in 8 nights and very very little sleep must have been enough for this old lady.
